Hi everyone my names Joel and I'm a designer. I'm currently making a game for my final year project called hungry monsters. The program I've chosen is unity for its simplicity and time saving skills. For a majority of the first months I want to focus on scripting and gameplay mechanics, so I'll be using simple white boxing to show how the map would look and show it working.
Level block outs and character placements
The game is going to be set in a 1950's american diner, the enemies are going to be coming down the highway on the right to attack the diner on the left. (Formula by plants vs zombies) I'll be scripting a grid system in the middle and creating a drag drop ui hud located at the bottom of the map. The core mechanics will be similar to plants vs zombies however I'll be making my own weapons to fend of the monsters. All scripts will be made by myself as well as the ui and front end designs.
Main menu location testing
My front end interface is going to be an ingame front end. The main menu will be the menu of the diner and this is where the player will launch the game from. After the player presses start the camera will fly down to this location.
Scale Testing
At this stage I'm testing out the scale properly making sure the diner and the monster is the correct height within my game. At this point I would like to point out that the secondary assets which will be in my game wont be my own but free ones collected from the unity store and correctly referenced in my hand in document.
Next milestone
My next update will be on the 25th of September. I plan to by then be finish with my grid system and video showing it working. I.E temporary mechanics being placed onto my grid firing at the enemies. Enemies walking with animations applied. My first lighting pass of the level. Terrain fixed so not so flat and a skybox around my level to look more like an american dirt road. Although my milestone is on the 25th. I will be posting a video of a working ingame front end over the weekend.
Hey folks this is a tad update on my final year project. I'm currently editing a script for a main menu which is going to be ingame. I've currently imported my 3d text and have colliders applied to all of them. I'm currently doing some Photoshop designs for my menu.
I've been playing around with my scripts for this as shown below.
I've been playing around with a simple script to change the colour of the text when the player roller overs the text in the menu. I'll be uploading a few videos this weekend demoing this.
As for my grid system I'll be making one similar to plants vs zombies.
It will be a 6 by six grid system that will be drag and drop. How ever I will create a rollover still grid system which will highlight when the player places and object on that tile. Each item will be purchasable through score points. The score points you will earn from defeating the enemies.
The playing area will be the car park outside the diner unlike plants vs zombies my enemies will be walking down the road and will have a script to come in at certain times to attack the diner.
For my hud I've been doing some R&D looking at different menu designs from the 50's and adapting my own design from them.
I'm currently editing my menu and I'm looking into old retro 50's menus for my front end design. There are going to be 4 links in my front end Start, Art work, Controls and Quit. All pages will have a graphic related to the 50's.

I will have an animation on the top left with a flickering neon sign to add some character to my front end. But still feel like it needs something extra.
